LINE Poster!
November 20, 2009Thinking about performance?
November 20, 2009Yes, performance art is in the air!
First with your line performance next Monday at 7:30… and then with the amazingly fun and dynamic Tableau Vivant that you will all be a part of soon! For inspiration check out the Performa event site for links to a number of current performance artists or take a moment to check out the Harp + Silver site, two artists who visited Alfred last year.

Also you might enjoy this music video (especially for the group who is making pop-culture references!)
The Group: Homework
November 18, 2009You should be completeing your group presentations for next week, You should complete them for class time on Monday. We will then conduct a dress rehearsal in class prior to the performance on Monday evening.
Remember:
- Your presentation should incorporate some aspect of each persons research.
- The presentation is still in reference to The Line.
- The presentation should be time-based (i.e. performance, video, sound, presentation, combination of some or all of those, etc.)
- The presentation should be 5-10 minutes in length.
- If you are in need of lighting or any other technical assistance, make sure you come to class with definite ideas about what you want and when you want it so that we can arrange all of this on Monday.
IN ADDITION: You should create a post on your blog titled “group” which briefly describes your group’s theme and membership, and reflections on how you think your individual research relates to the group presentation.
The Focus: Homework
November 10, 2009Your task this weekend is to analyze your research to date and focus on a particular aspect of your word to research further and IN DEPTH. What are you most interested in, what are you most excited about?
You will then create an informative structure (presentation, maps, installations, objects, animations, video, sounds, images, book, etc, etc,) that shares your research with an audience.
Keep in Mind:
- You are still dealing with The Line
- Focus on an aspect or avenue to research that is exciting to you.
- Consider methods for your informative structure that are interesting and creative. How can you make your work interesting and engaging? How do you get your audience to need/want to spend time with it?
- Consider how your informative structure depicts your research without you there to explain it. What bits of information are most essential to understand, is there something for the audience to question and explore?
- Consider your choice of method/ process/ material. What is necessary? What is appropriate? (For example: Remember that even your choice of paper or font has an effect on the information that you present.)
- This project is the culmination of 4 weeks of research. Does what you are doing live-up to that? Is it appropriately involved and ambitious?
****Let Michelle and Brett know by Sunday at noon if you need any technological resources (beside a video projector) for the presentation of your work. If you are presenting video or sound work please bring it on a thumb drive or DVD/ CD, so that we can install all media work on one computer.
The Word: Homework
November 2, 2009Your task for this week is to research your word and collect information about that word along The Line.
Several things to remember:
- Collect a wide variety of information (objects, images, sounds, descriptions, interviews, written impressions, poems, stories, ideas, videos, etc., etc.)
- Use a variety of tools/methods/ perspectives
- Information is your material. The more information you have the more you have to work with.
- The information is on/in the line, you need to continue to explore it.
- Consider a number of different interpretations of your word.
- Don’t stick to the obvious or the immediate; use your imagination, be creative.
- Be excited. If the information you are collecting is not interesting to you then it won’t be interesting to others.
Video anyone?
November 1, 2009We also have several Flip Video cameras to lend for short periods of time. Please check one out with Michelle or Brett. Here is a You Tube video that can get you started on shooting good videos with the Flip Video camera.

The Line: Homework
October 28, 2009For your homework this week, please observe, investigate, and explore the line from start to finish. As you move along the line, collect images, text, sound and drawings to compile a dossier of information about the line. As we said in class, “The more the better!” You will select and organize this information on your blog by Sunday at midnight. In addition, please bring ALL of the information and images that you collected to class on Monday.
Keep in mind: Respect your surroundings and community. When exploring the forest area, please do not go alone, do not go near dusk, and please take some water!
Also: Remember The Line is a space not a plane, be aware of your perspective, change your perspective, and be thorough.
The Line: Maps
October 28, 2009For the rest of this workshop we will be researching a line through Alfred that is 5 feet wide and 1 mile long. Here are a set of maps depicting the line (thank you to Justin Grigg our GIS master). They are in PDF format which should allow you to print them on 8.5″ x 11″ paper without effecting the scale. Click on each of the tile links below.
